Domaine de Cigalus
Domaine de Cigalus is the result of a desire to create a viticultural world apart. It has been cultivated using biodynamic methods since it was acquired by Gérard Bertrand in 1995. This growing method encourages Man to fully respect Nature and his surroundings. Noble grape varieties, both red and white can express themselves in an exceptional and original way while preserving a Mediterranean authenticity, the very identity of Languedoc wines.
With the purchase of Domaine de Cigalus in 1995, Gérard Bertrand finally found the terroir he had been searching for. A terroir where noble grape varieties, both red and white, can express themselves in an exceptional and original way while still preserving a Mediterranean authenticity, the very identity of Languedoc wines. Taking the quality approach to the extreme, Gérard Bertrand decided to adopt biodynamic methods. In 2010 the estate was awarded the Demeter label.
Biodynamics is one of the strong points of the Group. It demands a profound respect for the environment and the terroir on a daily basis. This method of farming is based on the use of compost and biodynamic mixtures made from medicinal plants instead of chemical treatments. The biodynamic approach includes all the natural elements surrounding the vineyard.
Domaine de Cigalus is the result of a desire to create a viticultural world apart. The Mediterranean influence of the area is reflected in the estate’s name. The vines totally surrounding the property only add to the magic and unique aspect of this estate.
The silt-clay soil and the presence of numerous reeds on the property indicate the abundant water supply. The terroir could be considered too fertile for vines but the subterranean layer of limestone on which the plots are planted greatly reduces their productivity. In addition, the sustainable intervention of Man controls the vigour of the vine and thus allows it to produce wines of great quality.

The terroir at Domaine de Cigalus is composed of a silt-clay soil with a subterranean slab of limestone. The vines form a single plot surrounding the estate. The climate is similar to that of Corbières, hot and yet not arid.
AReA OF VINES
The 75 hectares of the estate are planted with Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon for the whites, along with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Caladoc for the reds. Noble grape varieties which can express themselves in an exceptional and original way while preserving a Mediterranean authenticity.
